INDEPENDENT COFFEE HOUSES

INDEPENDENT COFFEE HOUSES

Outpost Coffee.

There’s nothing nicer than a good cup of coffee and a relaxed environment to enjoy it in.

Independent coffee houses are thriving in Notts as part of the third wave coffee industry; a movement that considers coffee an artisanal product, such as wine, rather than a commodity.

With education and passion driving these establishments and the owners/staff providing these creative, welcoming spaces that we get to enjoy, we thought we’d better give you some insight into our favourites.

Outpost Coffee | @outpostcoffeeroasters

You’ll find Outpost Coffee in the centre of Hockley, just up the road from Mimm. With a fairly small space but full of people and experimental music on the speakers, Outpost kind of gives us the same vibes as the underground music culture. It’s intimate and inviting and the guys really know their stuff about coffee!

Their focus has always been based around a threefold approach of sourcing, roasting and training in order to bring not only exceptional coffee to you, but to provide better pay and support to growers and also local like-minded coffee retailers.

The preach the same practise within their food menu, sourcing local produce and providing balanced and healthy options to their customers. However, everyone needs something sweet too, so if you’re feeling a little naughty, they have a fantastic selection of cakes and treats.

Blend Cafe.

Blend | @blendnottingham

Located down at Sneinton Market, one of the great creative hubs in Notts, is Blend Cafe. With an industrial interior of pipes, metal frame windows and low hanging lampshades, this open plan space still manages to capture a serene mood, with help from it’s tall ceilings, huge windows all and a hell of a lot of plants.

Their drinks menu carries the classics along with experimental choices such as beetroot latte and cold brew filter coffees, all available to have with an array of dairy free milks. If you fancy something a little stronger, they also serve alcohol.

Elegant twists in the food menu such as the sourdough bread and @therealsauce sauces turn simple grilled cheeses into a delicacy. For sweeter options, they work with a number of local bakers, including @oozeeboozeebakes, another creative down at the sneinton hub who up until recently was working at blend.

There’s a large courtyard which catches the sun throughout the entire day (which is rare to find) and if you ever need to hire a venue for a private party or to host a talk, these guys love to offer out their space and help to be a part of something bigger!

The Specialty Coffee Shop.

The Specialty Coffee Shop | @thespecialtycoffeeshop

Following a volunteer trip that Lucy and Michaelangelo took in 2014 for the El Toledo Organic Coffee Farm, the couple experienced what real coffee production means. It gave them a vision for how they wanted to bring Notts of ethically sourced coffee and homemade food.

Michaelangelo is the face of the establishment and is genuinely one of the happiest, most passionate and knowledgeable people to be served by. Not only is the coffee impeccable, they offer a range of wholesome healthy brunch options as well as light lunch dishes inspired by the pairs Italian heritage.

Perhaps one of the most exciting things that they have to offer are there monthly masterclass in homebrewing, espresso and latte art. Ideal for a quirky afternoon, picking up a new skill or just in general getting educated on something that we all love!

They’ll ’ll be hosting a minifest in celebrating both coffee and their 3 year anniversary since opening the shop on May 18th, it’s a free event so get yourself down there!

Nottingham Coffee Club.

Nottingham Coffee Club | @nottscoffeeclub

You’ll find the Nottingham Coffee Club situated in the upstairs Clock Tower Dining Area inside the INTU Victoria Centre. Their ethos is to provide quality locally sourced products which show the best of what Notts has to offer.

The location is ideal for a rainy day where you can do all your shopping in one place and then head for a coffee a little later. With a dark and cosy interior, this is an ideal pit stop following your Saturday errands.

Supporting local bakers such as @mummagordonmakes and @doughnottsofficial with a variety of gluten free and vegan options, the treats are incredible to look at and taste so make sure you choose one to go with your coffee of choice!
