Checking in with KidSoSteez

Midlands-made KidSoSteez is fresh from his second release, 6ONKICKS. We caught up with the young creative to talk starting out in the music industry, his inspiration and the Midlands music scene.

As a young creative, how do you stay motivated?

I think everybody struggles with motivation from time to time, we’re all human at the end of the day. I guess I just try to make the most out of my good days and use what I have to show from them as motivation on the bad days. On top of that, new music, browsing YouTube for uplifting content & my son Rafael are a few others.

What is the core inspiration for your music?

The core inspiration for my music derives from my musical taste growing up. From young I would always want to dance and sing-along to the beat, i’ve always been quite vibrant in that sense. I try and make music that gives off that energy, whilst keeping to a relaxed/laidback persona as that’s what I’m really like.

How did you develop your style, both musically and in fashion?

Skateboarding is what introduced me to fashion and lead me
to how I dress today. Even though my style has evolved along the way I think its always evident I’m a skater and have grown up in that scene. Over time I’ve introduced streetwear into the mix which has contributed to the image you see today. Musically I’m still developing, and I know that constantly trying out different genres and styles is what helps you find your way, and you’re only going to get better when doing that.

How do you overcome setbacks?

That’s a good question. Sometimes you’ve just gotta work around them as best you can and accept it. I think the worst thing you can do when you face a setback is dawn on it without action. Maybe always having another
option to what you’re trying to do would be a good idea, but I’m quite a fixated person so that wouldn’t really work for me. I don’t have too much common sense but I have a good group of people around me that make up for that, haha.

You are just starting out in your career, what advice would you give to people in the same position as you?

1 million percent the best piece of advice I could give anyone is surround yourself with likeminded people. Surround yourself with people who wanna see you win instead of those who don’t. Anyone can make it happen if they really want it but some good guidance and motivation makes it a whole lot easier. Another thing is just try anything and don’t care about what anyone thinks, just do you and enjoy it!

Who is your biggest influence?

My son Raf. My idols in music like MJ, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Freddie Mercury plus a load of the new-gen artists. The future version of me inspires me. Does that make sense? My mum also inspires me. and people with a lot of money inspire me, haha. That’s more than one but yeah, loads!

Being from the East Midlands, how do you feel the music culture here has helped or influenced you?

Music is just such a big thing to so many people. It’s crazy to see locally how much energy and passion so many others have for music. I’ve gone to various kinds of shows/events over the years across my hometown Derby and Notts and it has shown me different sides to sub-culture across the spectrum, it has opened my eyes a lot. Whether it’s Rap, Dance or Rock theres people out there that like it. which has encouraged me to just make the music I genuinely want to make. And ultimately find a unique sound without being scared to show it.

What can we expect to see from KidSoSteez in the future?

Prepare for my sound to evolve into pockets you haven’t heard from me yet. I’m really starting to find myself as the artist I wanna become and the style of music I want to put out. Either way, expect more Steez!
